Retail inflation hits 15-month high on vegetable prices; food inflation in double digits
Tuesday, 15 August 2023 India's retail inflation climbed at its highest pace in 15 months in July due to a surge in food prices as supply-related issues persisted. According to the National Statistical Office, consumer prices rose to 7.4% YoY in July from June's 4.9%, the highest since April 2022. Food prices crossed double digits at 11.5% from 4.6% in June, with rural inflation surpassing urban at 7.6% and 7.2%, respectively.
In July, retail inflation in India experienced a significant upswing, reaching 7.44%, marking the highest rate since April 2022. This surge contrasts with the preceding four-month period of inflation below the central bank’s 6% tolerance threshold.
