It's minus 40C in Sweden and Finland as Nordic cold snap brings winter's coldest temperatures
Tuesday, 2 January 2024 Finland and Sweden have recorded the coldest temperatures of the winter so far with thermometers falling to minus 40C (minus 40F), or even lower, as the countries remained in the grip of the Nordic cold snap.
Sweden is swathed in snow as the country recorded its coldest January night in 25 years, with a reading of minus 43.6 degrees Celsius in the far north. A cold snap has hit the country and neighbouring Finland.
In recent days, students have held protests or set up encampments in Finland, Denmark, Italy, Spain, France and Britain following earlier protests in the US.
