Varadkar and Biden agree on need for Gaza ceasefire in St Patrick's Day White House talks
Friday, 15 March 2024 Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and US President Joe Biden have agreed on the need for a ceasefire "as soon as possible" in Gaza and a two-state solution for Palestinians during talks in Washington on Friday.
The White House on Friday said a proposal from Hamas militants on a Gaza ceasefire-for-hostages deal is certainly within the bounds of what is possible and expressed cautious optimism.
Ireland’s governing party Fine Gael has named Simon Harris as its new leader, paving the way for him to succeed former Prime Minister Leo Varadkar as the youngest Taoiseach in Irish history at age 37. Varadkar announced his surprise resignation on Wednesday, citing “personal and political, but mainly political reasons.” He had made headlines in 2017 when aged 38 he became the youngest prime minister in Irish history at that time.

The Irish prime minister, Leo Varadkar, has announced that he is standing down from the position and also relinquishing his role as the leader of the governing Fine Gael party. Varadkar announced the surprise move at a press conference in Dublin. His departure as head of the three-party coalition does not automatically trigger a general election and he could be replaced by a new Fine Gael leader.“One part of leadership is knowing when the time has come to pass on the baton to somebody else, and then having the courage to do it,” Varadkar said in an emotional statement. “That time is now. So I am resigning as president and leader of Fine Gael effective today and will resign as taoiseach (TEE-SHUHK) as soon as my successor is able to take up that office.” He said his reasons were “both personal and political”.

House Republicans were provided a
transcript of Biden's interview with Hur, but they wanted the audio, which the DOJ denied.
As a result, House Republicans were
moving to hold Attorney General
Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress.
On May 16, the Department of Justice told House Republicans that the president asserted executive privilege over audio from his interview with the special counsel.
The move protects Garland from criminal exposure as GOP lawmakers seek to hold him accountable.
Assistant Attorney General Carlos Uriarte
explained the DOJ's actions in a letter.

White House Counsel Ed Siskel also wrote a letter supporting the assertion of executive privilege. .

According to Biden campaign chair
Jen O'Malley Dillion, those dates are
"out of step with changes in the structure of our elections and the interests of voters.".
Trump went on to say that he'd like
to debate Biden more than twice.
I would strongly recommend more
than two debates and, for excitement
purposes, a very large venue, although
Biden is supposedly afraid of crowds - , Donald Trump, via Truth Social.
