Criminal justice laws set for overhaul: Govt brings bills to replace IPC, CrPC
Friday, 11 August 2023 India's criminal justice system is set for a complete overhaul. The government on Friday moved three bills in the Lok Sabha to replace colonial-era codes, with the objective of speeding up trials by laying down specific timelines, boosting rates of conviction by improving the quality of evidence and ensuring its integrity and by providing relief and protection to victims.
Labour shadow minister Nick Thomas-Symonds accuses the government of failing "comprehensively" to tackle knife crime, citing the rising cases of stabbings since 2015. Mr Thomas-Symonds says Labour would bring about a set of evidenced-based measures, including recruiting extra police officers to increase their presence on the streets. Report by Covellm.
