What's driving the spike in Sikh population in Canada after 1991
Wednesday, 20 September 2023
The Sikh population in Canada has been steadily increasing since 1991, with the latest census in 2021 showing that they make up 2.1% of the total population. The rise in Sikh immigration can be attributed to factors such as the period of militancy in Punjab and economic opportunities in Canada. Many Punjabi students, who are predominantly Sikhs, have been going to Canada on study visas. Of the 771,000 Sikhs in Canada, 30% are Canadian citizens by birth, 54% are immigrants, and 15% are non-permanent residents.
