‘Brahmins only’ crematorium sparks row

IndiaTimes Monday, 20 November 2023
Dalit groups in Kendrapara, Odisha, are protesting against the declaration by the oldest civic body that only Brahmins' bodies are entitled to be cremated in a specific crematorium. The crematorium, known as the "Brahmin Shamshan," has been operating since 1928. Dalit leaders argue that this is a violation of fundamental rights and have written to the govt seeking equal access for all Hindus. Some locals claim that there is an ulterior motive behind raising the issue.
