Assam illegal immigrants: Supreme Court hearing pleas to examine validity of Citizenship Act section 6A
The Supreme Court is hearing petitions to examine the constitutional validity of section 6A of the Citizenship Act, which relates to illegal immigrants in Assam. The five-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, is considering arguments presented by senior advocate Shyam Divan. Divan is discussing the historical background of the litigation and the 2014 judgement that referred the case to the larger Constitution bench. As part of the Assam Accord, section 6A was inserted into the Citizenship Act to grant citizenship to migrants in Assam.
