Karnataka: Communal issues take a backseat, for now

IndiaTimes Wednesday, 6 December 2023
The Congress government faces a challenge from the BJP during the winter session in Belagavi due to housing minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan's alleged inflammatory comments about the speaker's post. The BJP plans to push for Khan's expulsion, claiming his statements violate the Constitution. Congress has abandoned its proposal to repeal anti-conversion and anti-cow slaughter laws due to opposition from Lingayat and Brahmin mutts. They are focusing on the debate on drought and north Karnataka's development in the ongoing session. BJP also intends to move a privilege motion against Khan and there is speculation about the removal of VD Savarkar's portrait from the assembly hall.
