Private couriers in ambit of new Post-Office Bill
The Parliament passed the Post Office Bill, 2023 to replace the 125-year-old Indian Post Office Act, 1898. The bill simplifies the legislative framework for India Post and regulates private courier services. It allows the Centre to intercept, open, or detain any item and deliver it to custom authorities. The bill empowers the director general of postal services to frame regulations for citizen-centric services. The minister noted that post offices function like banking services with 26 crore accounts and Rs 17 lakh crore deposited in post office savings.
