SC trashes rape case filed by woman after 34 years

IndiaTimes Wednesday, 17 January 2024
Two years before the nationwide 'Me Too' movement gained momentum, in 2016, a Muslim woman filed a First Information Report (FIR) at a police station in Assam. She accused a Hindu man of sexually assaulting her in 1982 when she was a minor. To support her claim, she referenced the birth of a male child in 1983. The charges were sent for trial by a Kamrup district court, and the Gauhati High Court refused to quash the FIR, allowing the legal proceedings to move forward.
