Tax measure gets Speaker Pérez's support
Assembly Speaker John Pérez lost his legislative fight to fund college scholarships by raising corporate taxes through the Legislature this year - so he's throwing his support behind a ballot measure that would instate the same tax hike, albeit not for scholarships. Proponents of the measure announced the speaker's support this week, less than two weeks after Pérez's middle-class scholarship proposal died in the state Senate. The main backer of the measure, San Francisco's Tom Steyer, a billionaire hedge fund manager, spoke to the Sacramento Press Club this week to make his case for Prop. 39. [...] they couldn't even finish writing the damn thing. The measure by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, would prohibit California law enforcement officials from keeping a person in local jails strictly on an immigration hold, unless they have a serious or violent felony conviction in their past. Brown has kept his lips sealed as to where he stands on the above bills, but it seems that someone in his office has been paying attention to what lawmakers said during floor debates this year.
