The classified documents case against former President Donald Trump will begin on May 20, 2024, NBC News reports.

Judge Aileen Cannon, the federal judge overseeing the criminal trial, filed documents on July 21 which included the start date of the high-profile case.

NBC reports that the start date is a few months after the time frame counsel Jack Smith had requested and ahead of the post-election date requested by Trump's legal team.

.

Earlier this week, defense attorneys and federal prosecutors met at a hearing to argue for their preferred trial timelines.

The prosecution wanted a start date of December 11, 2023, while Trump's defense team pushed for the trial to be held after the 2024 election.

.

The former president is facing 37 counts that include willfully retaining national defense information, obstruction of justice and making false statements.

A former White House valet is also facing six felony counts for aiding Trump in hiding top-secret documents from investigators.

.

Both men have pleaded not guilty to the numerous charges against them.

In March, Trump is facing another criminal trial in Manhattan.

He has also pleaded not guilty in that case.

34 felony counts were brought against the former president, stemming from allegations that he falsified business records in order to hide hush money payments amid the 2016 election
