Vogtle Unit 3: First US nuclear plant in decades begins operations in Georgia | Oneindia News
Georgia Power in USA has announced that unit 3 of the Vogtle plant has begun commercial operations and is now sending power to the grid reliably.
At full capacity, the unit can produce 11,000 megawatts of electricity, which can power as many as 500,000 homes.
Power developed by the plant is being used in the states of Georgia, Florida, and Alabama in the United States.
This makes it the first commercial civil nuclear reactor that was built from scratch in USA in more than 30 years.
The last time a nuclear reactor started delivering energy to the power grid was in October 2016, when the Tennessee Valley Authority began commercial operation of its Watts Bar Unit 2 near Spring City.
Prior to that, there hadn’t been a new nuclear reactor turned on since Watts Bar 1 unit in May 1996.
Construction of Unit 2 of Watts Bar began in 1972 but that was paused in 1985.
Construction did not resume until 2007 and it wasn’t completed until 2016.
Tensions in Georgia over a divisive foreign influence law have exploded onto the streets, with protests against it occurring on an almost daily basis. Valerie Gauriat went to the country to find out more, for Euronews Witness.

NOAA Issues Rare , Warning Following Powerful , Solar Event.
CBS reports that a severe G4 geomagnetic storm
headed towards Earth has triggered a rare warning
from NOAA officials for the first time in two decades.
The warning comes following days of solar activity
that sent several waves of plasma in Earth's
direction along with powerful magnetic fields.
G4 storms are the second-strongest
type of geomagnetic storms and can
cause widespread voltage problems. .
NOAA warns that they can also cause some
protective assets to "trip out key assets from the grid,"
as well as cause orientation problems for spacecraft. .
If geomagnetic storms
were hurricanes, 'severe'
would be category 4. , Spaceweather.com, via CBS.
The powerful G4 storm could also cause
northern lights, or aurora borealis, to be seen
in northern California and as far south as Alabama.
In a May 9 press release, NOAA said that the solar
event began on May 8, when a group of sunspots
generated "several moderate to strong solar flares.".
According to NASA, solar flares are explosions of
radiation which are considered the strongest
explosive events in the solar system.
NOAA noted that the area, which
produced the recent flares, is roughly
16 times the diameter of the Earth.
The sunspots known as AR3664 measures about 124,000
miles across, and Space.com notes that it is one of the, "largest and most active
sunspots seen this solar cycle." .
According to NOAA, the geomagnetic storm
is expected to hit Earth as early as midday
on May 10 and continue through May 12

The word that Bruhat won the
competition with was "abseil.".
It means "descent in mountaineering by means

The finals only had eight spellers competing, the fewest since 2010, AP reports. .
Some critics were upset that the two spellers were subjected to a "spell-off" instead of being given the chance to compete in a conventional round.
