Al Jazeera reports that the European Union has opened an investigation into social media platform X regarding suspected Digital Services Act (DSA) violations.

The probe will be the first of its kind under the new law.

On December 18, European Commissioner Thierry Breton posted on the platform formerly known as Twitter that "formal infringement proceedings" had been opened "against @X.".

The Commission will now investigate X’s systems and policies related to certain suspected infringements, Johannes Bahrke, European Commissioner spokesperson, via Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera reports that the investigation will focus on X's efforts to curb the spread of illegal content and whether those efforts were effective.

The probe will also reportedly look at issues with user interface, deceptive "verified" accounts and a lack of access to data for researchers.
