UNRWA’s commissioner general says attacks on the agency’s reputation were intended to strip Palestinians of refugee status, a day after independent report found Israel still hadn’t provided any evidence staff had links to terror groups.
China's President Xi Jinping is embarking on a rare visit to Paris, with French President Emmanuel Macron poised to address pressing issues such as trade imbalances and seek Chinese support regarding the conflict in Ukraine. However, achieving these objectives during Xi's brief two-day visit to France will prove challenging, given the backdrop of escalating trade tensions between Europe and China. France is actively supporting a European Union investigation into Chinese exports of electric vehicles, while Beijing's recent initiation of an inquiry into brandy imports, predominantly from France, is widely perceived as retaliatory. Against this backdrop, Macron's administration is keen to emphasise the necessity of obtaining further assurances from Chinese authorities on trade matters. Xi's visit marks his first trip to Europe in half a decade, underscoring the significance of the occasion.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on May 5 that his government had unanimously voted to close down the local offices of Al Jazeera, a broadcaster owned by Qatar. Netanyahu announced the decision on X, formerly known as Twitter, but specifics regarding the implications, timing, and permanence of the closure remained unclear. This move marks an escalation in Israel's longstanding dispute with Al Jazeera and raises tensions with Qatar, particularly significant as Qatar is actively involved in mediating efforts to end the conflict in Gaza. Israel's contentious relationship with Al Jazeera stems from accusations of bias against the network.

Hamas’s armed wing said that the commander of its forces in the Tulkarem area of the West Bank was among four members of the group killed during a day-long Israeli raid in the town of Dayr al-Ghusun. A statement from the Izzaldin al-Qassam Brigades names Alaa Shreiteh, 45, as commander of the al-Qassam Brigades in the Tulkarem governorate. Shreiteh was jailed by Israel between 2002 and 2016. According to the IDF, there was a twelve-hour gun battle in the Tulkarem area of the West Bank between its forces and Hamas militants in which four Hamas men were killed. However, the identity of Alaa Shreiteh was revealed by the al-Qassim brigade early on Sunday. Hamas confirmed that four of the men killed during the raid in Deir al-Ghusun village were from its al-Qassam armed wing. The Palestinian health ministry said their bodies had been taken by the Israeli military. There was no information about the fifth man, whose body was too disfigured for immediate identification, the Palestinian health ministry in the West Bank said.
