Cyclone Michaung: North Indian Ocean Cyclone in 2023
Severe Cyclonic Storm Michaung was a strong tropical cyclone that made landfall near Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh, India, on December 5, 2023. It was the first cyclone to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast in two years, after Cyclone Gulab in September 2021. It was formed over the Bay of Bengal on November 29, 2023. It moved westward and intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on December 4, 2023. The storm then made landfall near Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh, on December 5, 2023, with winds of up to 110 kilometers per hour. It caused widespread damage in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The storm caused heavy rains, flooding, and power outages. At least 12 people were killed and around 9,450 people were evacuated. Named by Myanmar, Michaung means 'strength and resilience'
