The Capitals compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference and are owned by Ted Leonsis through Monumental Sports & Entertainment. The team initially played its home games at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, before moving to the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., in 1997.
