India to be main engine of global coal demand growth: IEA
Friday, 15 December 2023 India will drive global coal demand growth through 2026, despite calls to phase out fossil fuels. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects India's coal demand to rise 8% this year and 3.5% annually thereafter, reaching 1,397 million tonnes. This demand will put upward pressure on global consumption, which is expected to reach 8.5 billion tonnes by 2023. India's coal use will increase alongside the expansion of solar power capacity, as the country's economic growth requires additional coal-based generation capacity.
