Making exaggerated, bogus claims to get refunds punishable offence: I-T department

The Income Tax Department had cautioned taxpayers against making false claims on their returns, advising accurate filings for timely refunds. Over five crore ITRs were submitted by July 26, with a July 31 deadline. Most filings opted for the new tax regime.
