The U.N. says Rwanda-backed rebels are expanding their presence in eastern Congo after capturing the region’s major city. A U.N. human rights office spokesman said Friday that the agency is also concerned over executions it learned were carried out by the rebels as well as conflict-related sexual violence by Congolese government forces and their allies. The rebels were repelled by government forces in South Kivu late Thursday and a local administrative officer says hundreds of young people were registering as volunteers on Friday to join military training in the provincial capital. Much of Goma remained without water and electricity supplies. Residents trekked for hours to Lake Kivu to fetch water.
