Netflix Is Sued , Over ‘Baby Reindeer’.
Scottish woman Fiona Harvey is suing Netflix for $170 million, The Verge reports. .
She claims that her "identity and likeness" were referenced for the show's character, Martha Scott.
and used to tell "brutal lies" which ruined
"her reputation, her character and her life.".
Series creator Richard Gadd claims that the show is based on a "true story" of his personal experiences.
in which he portrays a "fictionalized version of himself being stalked by Martha," The Verge reports. .
Harvey claims that her identity as the inspiration for Martha was "completely undisguised" and Netflix "did literally nothing" in terms of fact-checking. .
The lies that Defendants told about
Harvey to over 50 million people
worldwide include that Harvey is a
twice-convicted stalker who was
sentenced to five years in prison, and
that Harvey sexually assaulted Gadd, Fiona Harvey's lawyers, via filing.
Defendants told these lies, and
never stopped, because it was a
better story than the truth, and
better stories made money, Fiona Harvey's lawyers, via filing.
Gadd previously made a statement to
'The Guardian' about 'Baby Reindeer.'.
It’s very emotionally true, obviously:
I was severely stalked and severely
abused. But we wanted it to exist in
the sphere of art, as well as protect
the people it’s based on, Richard Gadd, to 'The Guardian'.
In a statement to CNN, Netflix said that it plans “to defend this matter vigorously and to stand by Richard Gadd’s right to tell his story.”
