Calls from within the Democratic Party for a potential replacement for President Joe Biden are growing following his underwhelming performance in last week’s first presidential debate against former President Donald Trump. While a change at the top of the ticket is not impossible, it would require Biden to step aside, something his campaign has made clear will not happen. A switch in candidates carries significant risks, especially with the November election less than 150 days away and the Democratic National Convention in August. A change is almost certainly contingent on Biden himself deciding to step aside and release the pledged delegates he has collected so far. Biden, 81, holds 3,894 of 3,937 delegates, according to The Associated Press. If he releases them, a brokered convention could take place, where delegates would vote to select a new nominee.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has denounced recent viral videos depicting US President Joe Biden as confused at public events, labelling them as “cheap fakes.” Her comments follow the spread of several clips on social media, which have ignited debates about the president's mental fitness. In one widely shared video, President Biden appears to struggle with sitting down during a D-Day memorial event in France. Commenters suggested he seemed “completely lost” or experiencing “some kind of episode.” Another clip from a G7 meeting in Italy shows Biden wandering away from the group during a skydiving demonstration, only to be guided back by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

After an Israeli operation in Gaza killed over 210 Palestinians, Axios revealed direct U.S. involvement in freeing 4 Israeli hostages. This raises questions about U.S. motives for disclosing sensitive information. The Palestinian resistance may respond with complex operations to capture Israelis, deny Netanyahu victories, and challenge U.S. mediation efforts. Hamas could reject negotiations involving the U.S., seen as supportive of Israel rather than a neutral mediator, demanding a permanent end to the conflict.
