The banks of Bridgewater Canal have collapsed near Little Bollington in Cheshire following heavy rain, flooding nearby fields and leaving barges stranded. Major incident declared in Greater Manchester after floods

A major incident has been declared in Greater Manchester after severe rainfall on New Year’s Day caused widespread flooding. Homes have been evacuated, train lines and roads have closed, and a canal has collapsed following heavy rain. Early-stage cancer diagnoses at record levels

The number of patients being diagnosed with cancer at an early stage in England has reached a record high. Nearly three in five patients are being diagnosed at stages one and two, when the cancer is easier to treat. Pressures on the NHS however, mean targets for starting treatment are still not where they'd like them to be, said Professor Peter Johnson, Clinical director for cancer, NHS England.
