Monday, 1 January 2024 The first tsunami waves hit Japan after an earthquake of 7.4 magnitude struck the island country earlier today. A tsunami around one metre high struck parts of the west coast along the Sea of Japan, with a larger wave expected, reported Japan's public broadcaster NHK.
The 7.5-magnitude quake on January 1 that rattled Ishikawa prefecture on the island of Honshu triggered tsunami waves, sparked a major fire, tore apart roads and flattened houses, leaving only devastation in the coastal town of Suzu. At least 62 people died in Japan.
