The view of the ceasefire vote from a Birmingham mosque
Wednesday, 21 February 2024 It's a rainy day in Birmingham and, perhaps unsurprisingly, the vote tonight in the House of Commons over support for a ceasefire in Gaza is not the first thing on people's minds.
Sir Keir Starmer said the UK must "double down" it's support for Ukraine after returning from the G20 summit in Brazil. Addressing the House of Commons on Thursday, the prime minister said it "could not be more clear" that "this is a man that wants destruction, not peace".
"After 1,000 days of war, I am clear that we must double down in our support. We will not be deterred or distracted by reckless threats," he added.

The opposition chief whip in the House of Commons has weighed in on the controversial comments about maternity pay at the Conservative conference. Kemi Badenoch had said statutory maternity pay, set up to support mothers for 39 weeks after having a baby, is a "function of tax" which she described as "excessive". Stuart Andrew says the Tory leadership candidates are entitled to "stand up for what they believe in and put that forward to the party."

Senate Democrats displayed growing internal division over US arms sales to Israel, with approximately one-third voting to block $1.097 billion in weapons transfers. Led by Bernie Sanders, these progressive Democrats highlighted humanitarian concerns in Gaza, challenging the Biden administration's stance. The votes revealed increasing tensions within the party regarding Israel's military campaign, though the resolutions were ultimately unsuccessful.

Tensions in the Red Sea escalated dramatically as Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels targeted the Panama-flagged bulk carrier Anadolu S with two missile strikes in a matter of hours. The first attack occurred late Sunday night, narrowly missing the vessel's stern. Despite warnings, the ship continued its course, prompting a second strike the following day, landing just a nautical mile away.
While no casualties or damage were reported, the incident highlights the Houthis' growing maritime campaign, which they claim is in solidarity with Gaza. The Bahrain-based Combined Task Force confirmed the strikes, raising concerns over shipping safety in the region. This bold assault underscores the escalating risks for international vessels navigating the Red Sea amid intensifying regional tensions.
