Major incident declared in Greater Manchester after floods

A major incident has been declared in Greater Manchester after severe rainfall on New Year’s Day caused widespread flooding. Homes have been evacuated, train lines and roads have closed, and a canal has collapsed following heavy rain. Clean up underway as flooding wreaks havoc in north west

A major clean-up operation is under way in parts of Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire after heavy rainfall overnight into New Year's Day. Hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate from their homes after floodwater reached the second floor of their apartment building, and cars were left submerged in rainwater on the A555 Manchester Airport relief road in Handforth.
