On December 26, 2024, violent clashes broke out in Syria between remnants of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militants in the Tartous governorate. The violence escalated after 14 HTS militants were killed in an ambush, attributed to former government loyalists. Amid ongoing unrest, protests erupted across Syria, particularly by the Alawite and Christian communities, following incidents like the desecration of an Alawite shrine and the burning of a Christmas tree. The HTS-led authorities imposed curfews in response, and sectarian tensions continued to rise.
