What we know so far about the Russian concert attack
Saturday, 23 March 2024 Vladimir Putin has linked the deadliest attack in Russia for years to Ukraine - despite a branch of Islamic State claiming responsibility.
The director of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), Alexander Bortnikov, said on Tuesday that the US, UK and Ukraine were behind the Moscow concert hall attack that killed at least 139 people on Friday - despite repeated claims of responsibility by Islamic State.
Russian forces showcased precision drone warfare in Ukraine, releasing footage of a successful bunker attack in Donbass. The Vostok battle group's UAV penetrated a Ukrainian military stronghold, while another video claimed a howitzer strike on a drone crew. Russia continues its frontline advance, announcing the "liberation" of Ilyinka village and maintaining strategic momentum in the ongoing conflict.

Russia launched its first-ever intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) at Ukraine, targeting critical infrastructure in Dnipro. This unprecedented strike marks a significant escalation in the conflict, following Ukraine's recent attacks inside Russian territory using U.S. and British missiles. The long-range missile, capable of carrying nuclear warheads, heightens tensions and raises concerns about potential nuclear confrontation, with Putin's altered nuclear doctrine adding to the uncertainty.

The US military has launched a series of airstrikes targeting sites in Syria associated with Iran-aligned groups, a day after an assault on America’s largest command centre in the region. The strikes, conducted by US Central Command, were in retaliation for recent attacks on US personnel stationed in Syria. Centcom emphasised that the action was a direct response to the escalating violence aimed at American forces, underscoring the US's commitment to protecting its troops and partners in the region.
The airstrikes, which hit multiple sites believed to be linked to Iranian-backed militias, aim to degrade the ability of these groups to plan and execute future attacks against US forces. The US military presence in Syria, primarily focused on combating ISIS remnants, has faced increasing threats from Iran-aligned militias, complicating efforts to stabilise the region. Centcom's statement reinforced that such attacks on US forces would not be tolerated, sending a strong message to Tehran-backed militants. The escalation comes amid growing tensions in Syria, where Iran-backed groups maintain a significant presence, particularly in the east.
