Tuesday, 3 September 2024 () Former minister Tom Tugendhat has apologised for the "disrespect and double standards" of previous Conservative governments as he made his appeal to become the next party leader.
Tom Tugendhat, one of the six Tory MPs vying to be Rishi Sunak’s successor as Conservative leader, formally launches his campaign, admitting that he is applying for a job that he doesn't want. The MP for Tonbridge said: "I don't want to be Leader of the Opposition, I want to be prime minister". He continued: "I don't want to oppose, I want to govern, but first we need to change". Tom Tugendhat began his leadership campaign launch with an apology on behalf of the Conservative Party. He said: "The Conservative Party owes you better. Politics isn’t a game and we all know the cost when government isn’t sober and serious.” Reflecting on the end of the last government, he added: “I saw duty give way to ego.
