Bridgewater Canal collapses from heavy rain

The banks of Bridgewater Canal have collapsed near Little Bollington in Cheshire following heavy rain, flooding nearby fields and leaving barges stranded. Clean up underway as flooding wreaks havoc in north west

A major clean-up operation is under way in parts of Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire after heavy rainfall overnight into New Year's Day. Hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate from their homes after floodwater reached the second floor of their apartment building, and cars were left submerged in rainwater on the A555 Manchester Airport relief road in Handforth.
