Embattled COP29 climate summit strikes last ditch deal on funding for vulnerable countries
Saturday, 23 November 2024 The COP29 climate talks have reached a last ditch deal on cash for developing countries, pulling the summit back from the brink of collapse after a group of countries stormed out of a negotiating room earlier.
A new climate finance deal is agreed at the COP29 conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, following an exhaustive two weeks of negotiations. The deal commits developed nations to pay at least $300 billion a year by 2035 to help developing countries green their economies and prepare for disasters.
The European Union's climate envoy Wopke Hoekstra describes the draft deal at the deadlocked UN COP29 summit in Azerbijan as "unacceptable", with just one day left to go on the conference's agenda.
