Arizona voters to decide on expanding abortion access months after facing a potential near-total ban

SeattlePI.com Tuesday, 5 November 2024 ()
Arizona voters are set to decide whether to guarantee the right to abortion in the state constitution. The swing state is one of nine with abortion on the ballot. Arizona has been whipsawed since April when the state Supreme Court ruled that a dormant 1864 law banning nearly all abortions could be enforced. The Legislature quickly repealed the law. The issue could also influence key state legislative races and shift the balance of power in the legislature, which Republicans currently hold by razor-thin margins. Another measure could shield two conservative justices on the high court up for retention this year who are facing scrutiny for supporting the ruling that allowed the state to enforce the near-total ban.
