Over 3 lakh hectares of forest land diverted under Forest Conservation Act in 15 years: Govt

More than 300,000 hectares of forest lands have been diverted for non-forestry uses in India over the last 15 years, Minister of Environment Bhupender Yadav informed Parliament. Punjab has seen the most forest land conversion, with more than 61,318 hectares being diverted since 2008 down to non-forestry use. Mining has affected the largest area – 58,282 hectares, even as road construction, irrigation, hydel power, and transmission lines are among other categories.
