Railway Board chief spells out ‘panch prans’ for employees
Monday, 11 September 2023 Jaya Varma Sinha, the first woman chairperson of the Railway Board, has outlined five key priorities for all railway employees: safety, integrity, capacity augmentation, revenue generation, and customer amenities and experience. She also stressed the need for transparency and zero-tolerance towards misconduct. Furthermore, Sinha encouraged railway staff to focus on executing projects efficiently and increasing freight loading to make the railways self-sustaining.
Following the Kanchenjunga Express train accident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticised the Railway Ministry for neglecting passenger amenities and the well-being of railway employees, including officials, engineers, technical staff, and workers. She highlighted that their old pension has been withdrawn and accused the government of focusing more on elections and manipulation rather than governance. Congress leader Pawan Khera also condemned the government, pointing out the recurring nature of such tragic incidents and accusing the ministry of not learning from past mistakes. He criticised the ministers for visiting the incident site primarily for publicity and emphasised that in the past, leaders from his party would resign after such accidents, setting a standard of accountability.
