He has won several prestigious awards for his remarkable works. Born in Kumbakonam on August 7, 1925, Swaminathan switched from studying medicine to the agricultural field after witnessing the Great Bengal Famine of 1943. He was the founder of MS Swaminathan Research Foundation.
