The Centre has rejected the demand of traders from Nashik to reduce the 40% duty on onion exports. The issue has been referred to a high power committee for a final decision. The Centre has also declined the demand to refrain central agencies from selling onions, stating that they are monitoring prices and selling onions in markets where rates are high to provide relief to consumers. Central agencies have been instructed to procure an additional 2 lakh tonnes of onions from farmers. Traders in Nashik are unhappy with the decision and will meet to discuss their next steps.
