Today in history: Maharaja Hari Singh signed instrument of accession making Kashmir part of India

IndiaTimes Thursday, 26 October 2023
In 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir decided to accede to India due to a tribal invasion by Pakistani forces, who were committing acts of violence and genocide against non-Muslims. The invasion led to the signing of the Instrument of Accession, allowing Jammu and Kashmir to join India. The decision was influenced by factors such as the desire for military assistance, the preferences of the population, and the principles of secularism and democracy offered by India.

Remembering Capt Sekhar Ghosh on His Death Anniversary | Shaurya Chakra | Oneindia English

Capt Sekhar Ghosh was a valiant officer born on September 27, 1975, in Barrackpore, West Bengal. The son of an army veteran, late Lt Col Shankar Nath Ghosh and Smt Ira Ghosh, he grew up with a deep sense of patriotism. Capt Sekhar pursued his passion for the military by joining IMA. He was commissioned into the Army Service Corps in December 1997 and later served with the 2 Sikh Infantry Battalion in Jammu & Kashmir. Capt Sekhar Ghosh was known for his exceptional soldierly skills and leadership. He was awarded the Best Young Officer's Trophy in 1999 and a COAS Commendation Card in 2000 for his outstanding performance. His bravery and commitment were most evident during a counter-insurgency operation in Rajouri, J&K, in August 2000. Leading his troops in a fierce battle against terrorists, Capt Sekhar displayed extraordinary courage, eliminating multiple terrorists and saving his comrades. Tragically, he was martyred during the operation on August 12, 2000, just shy of his 25th birthday. For his supreme sacrifice and valour, Capt Sekhar Ghosh was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of India's highest gallantry awards.
