Identify poor prisoners for financial aid to secure release, MHA tells states

The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs has urged state and union territory prison departments to activate a scheme providing financial aid to poor prisoners who are unable to pay fines or secure bail. The ministry reminded officials of guidelines and standard operating procedures issued in June 2023, which require the establishment of committees to identify eligible prisoners for the scheme. The government has already allocated funds for the initiative.
