Routine screening with serum PSA not needed, says ICMR

IndiaTimes Friday, 3 November 2023
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has stated that routine screening for prostate cancer using serum PSA is not recommended, regardless of age or family history. The ICMR's consensus document on prostate cancer management emphasizes that there is no evidence to support population-based screening using PSA for early detection. The US Preventive Services Task Force also recommends individualized decision-making regarding PSA-based screening, due to potential harms such as false-positive results and overdiagnosis. The incidence of prostate cancer is increasing in India, with it being among the top 10 cancers in urban areas.
