Aligarh may soon be renamed Harigarh, resolution passed in civic body meeting
Wednesday, 8 November 2023 The mayor of Aligarh Nagar Nigam, Prashant Singhal, has announced that a resolution proposing the renaming of Aligarh to Harigarh has been passed by the civic body and will now be forwarded to the government for consideration. The renaming of Aligarh has been a longstanding demand, and a similar resolution was passed by the district council earlier.
A deadly stampede at preacher Bhole Baba's satsang in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, resulted in 121 fatalities. In response, the UP Police arrested six members of the organizing committee who worked as volunteers. Security has been heightened around the ashram since the incident. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi visited Hathras and Aligarh to meet with victims' families and those affected by the tragedy. The stampede has sparked concerns about crowd management and safety at large religious gatherings in the region.
