The Uttarakhand government plans to hold a special session of the state assembly after Diwali to pass the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill. Once implemented, Uttarakhand will be the first state in India to adopt the UCC. A panel headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Desai has completed the draft report for UCC implementation in Uttarakhand, which is expected to be handed over to the state government soon. The UCC will provide a legal framework for marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance for all citizens regardless of their religion.
