Representation of SCs/STs: Supreme Court asks Centre to set up fresh delimitation commission
Thursday, 23 November 2023 The Supreme Court has directed the Central government to establish a new delimitation commission for proportional representation of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). The court cannot require Parliament to make laws for representation of other ST communities. The order came in response to a plea for representation of the Limbu and Tamang communities in the assemblies of Sikkim and West Bengal. An NGO argued that the denial of representation violated the constitutional rights of these communities, as their population had increased significantly.
