JD(S) expelled suspended Karnataka unit president CM Ibrahim and national vice-president CK Nanu from the party for anti-party activities. Both had criticized party supremo HD Deve Gowda's decision to ally with BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This decision was taken in their presence and in the interest of the party, but their public criticism damaged the party's image and leadership. Ibrahim was the state unit president but the party's changed stance towards Muslims caused him discomfort. Gowda suspended Ibrahim and installed HD Kumaraswamy as the interim president.
