IndiaTimes Sunday, 10 December 2023
The Gujarat prisons witnessed a significant increase in the number of inmates on death row in 2022, reaching a total of 49. This surge was primarily due to the judgement of the 2008 serial blasts case, where 38 out of 49 convicts were awarded the death sentence. The report also highlighted the issue of overcrowding and understaffing in state prisons, with an 18% increase in inmates compared to the capacity. Gujarat also had the highest number of undertrials of Pakistani origin, along with inmates from various other countries.
