In big boost for Modi govt, Supreme Court upholds abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir
The Supreme Court of India, in a historic decision, upheld the Modi government's abrogation of Article 370. The five-judge Constitution bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, delivered three concurring verdicts. The court stated that Jammu and Kashmir's special status was a feature of asymmetric federalism and not sovereignty. It also declared the J&K constitution redundant and directed the Election Commission to organize elections for J&K's Legislative Assembly by September 2024. This ruling has significant political and social implications and brings J&K on an equal footing with other states.
