IndiaTimes Tuesday, 12 December 2023
The Supreme Court upheld the Centre's decision to abrogate Article 370, stating it was not motivated by malafide intent. The court emphasized that Article 370 was a temporary provision and the president had the power to revoke it. Additionally, the court directed the Election Commission to conduct elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 2024 and ordered the reinstatement of statehood in the region. On August 9, 2024, the Supreme Court of India granted bail to former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in both CBI and ED cases related to the Excise Policy. The court emphasised Sisodia's right to a speedy trial, citing his 17-month incarceration. Sisodia must pay ₹10 lakh in bail bonds, surrender his passport, and report to the police station weekly.
