Report sought from 10 states on why SC status not granted to subcastes among rehabilitated Bengalis
Tuesday, 19 December 2023 The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has issued notices to 10 states seeking a report on why scheduled caste status has not been granted to Namasudra, Paundra, and Rajvanshi sub-castes among rehabilitated Bengalis who came from East Pakistan in 1947. The NCSC Chairman (in-charge) Arun Haldar has started an investigation and sought a report. The Uttar Pradesh government has passed a bill to grant them SC status, pending with the central government. The Nikhil Bharat Bengali Samanway Samiti, led by Dr Subodh Biswas, has been raising concerns for over two decades.

In a devastating road accident today, at least 18 people lost their lives and many others were injured after the bus they were travelling in collided with another vehicle in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. Among the deceased were three women and one child, police reported. The double-decker bus, which was en route from Biharβs Sitamarhi to Delhi, crashed into a milk tanker from behind on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway early this morning. The force of the collision was immense, causing several passengers to be flung out of the bus, police stated.
