DMK's Villupuram strongman K Ponmudy might become the first serving DMK minister to be sentenced for corruption, which is a huge setback for the party. The conviction may affect the DMK's electoral prospects, but corruption charges have never been a deciding factor in Tamil Nadu elections. The BJP is using the conviction to attack the DMK and plans to make corruption a key campaign issue in the 2024 elections. The AIADMK, the principal opposition party, has remained silent on Ponmudy's conviction.
