The variant has changed its requirements for entering cells, potentially leading to more efficient infection of specific tissues such as the gut. JN.1 is rapidly spreading and has been designated a variant of interest by the World Health Organization. It accounts for a significant proportion of strains in circulation and is contributing to rising Covid hospitalizations.
