1,081 sewer deaths since 1993, relief paid in 925 cases

Out of the 1,081 sewer deaths reported in India, 925 cases have received compensation, while 115 cases are still awaiting compensation. The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) shared this data in response to the parliamentary committee's report on the 'Demands for Grants (2023-24)' of the ministry. The committee emphasized the need for states and Union Territories to ensure the payment of Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the families of sewer workers who die while on duty, as per the Supreme Court's 2014 judgment.
